February 2nd is a special day for Itiah Angels for Learning (IAFL). Known as Jour De La Chandeleur or Candlemas which is marked by Groundhogs peeking at their shadows, candles being lit, and crêpes being enjoyed. But for my family and me, it holds an even deeper meaning: it is my grandmother’s birthday. In 2026, she would have been 106 years old.
My grandmother’s significance to the mission of IAFL runs deep. She firmly believed in the value of education and that children must be protected and loved. She made it a priority to pass that belief on to everyone around her, especially her children and grandchildren. She ensured that her daughter, IAFLs founder, attended the EML School as a child, and even enrolled her in daycare, something that was rare and difficult in Haiti unless you were wealthy. Education is one of the most powerful expressions of love we can offer.
Those early investments in learning shaped a future. Years later, that same daughter founded this charity and now leads a team dedicated to giving back, so more students can access the same opportunities. In many ways, my grandmother was the first to plant the seed that would eventually grow into Itiah Angels for Learning.
As a tribute to my grandmother, the “Pink Lady” herself, a woman of strength, grace, and resilience, we chose a fitting way to honor her memory. What better tribute than designing a beverage that shares her nickname and her signature pink color to celebrate her birthday in heaven. Made with pomegranate juice, freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice, crushed mint leaves, and garnished with chopped lemons, the Pink Lady Mocktail is vibrant, refreshing, and full of life much like the woman who inspired it.
Knowing my grandmother, she would have adored the mocktail for its beautiful pink hue, though she might have preferred it with a little extra sugar. She did have a sweet tooth. However it is made, what matters most is that it is pink.
Like many birthdays, this moment reminds us to cherish what brings joy to those we love and to honor the legacy they leave behind. For us, her legacy lives on through education, opportunity, and the countless lives touched by Itiah Angels for Learning nonprofit organization.
In her honor, we invite you to visit our website and read about our inspiration. Your continued commitment reminds us that we are not alone in this endeavor, It also means safety, stability, and the chance for the girls we serve to imagine a future filled with possibilities.
Cheers to my Grandmother’s loving heart ❤️
