You may have heard the expression “Grenadiers Alaso!” during the World Cup and wondered what it means. It is a Haitian Creole rallying cry that translates to “Grenadiers, never give up!” or “Grenadiers, keep fighting!” “Grenadiers” is the nickname of Haiti’s national team, while “Alaso” is a call to persevere. Together, the phrase expresses resilience, determination, and unwavering support for Haiti’s national teams and, more broadly, the enduring spirit of the Haitian people.
The term grenadier dates back to the 17th century, when grenadiers were selected because they were physically strong, courageous, and disciplined enough to carry explosives into the heart of battle. They were often the tallest, strongest, and most experienced soldiers, leading assaults and serving as the military’s most elite infantry units.
Haiti’s revolutionary army adopted the title Grenadiers, drawing from French military tradition while redefining it through the struggle for freedom. Many leaders of the Haitian Revolution, including formerly enslaved soldiers and free men of color, had served in or fought alongside French colonial forces and were familiar with the French military, where grenadiers represented elite troops. During the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), Haiti’s Grenadiers earned an extraordinary reputation for courage and discipline. Following independence on January 1, 1804, they came to symbolize not only military excellence but also the triumph of the world’s only successful slave revolution. They became the defenders of the first Black republic.
Watching Haiti return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after 52 years filled us with an overwhelming sense of pride because their mere participation and goals scored reminded the world of something we have always known: that you can never count out the resilience of the Haitian people. Time and again, Haiti has been defined by its hardships, yet its greatest story has always been its ability to rise, persevere, and inspire.
For the volunteers of Itiah Angels for Learning, this moment reinforces why our commitment to education is more important than ever. Every child we help educate is a future athlete, scientist, teacher, entrepreneur, artist, or leader waiting for the opportunity to shine. The players who proudly wore Haiti’s colors on the world’s biggest stage were once children with dreams. Today, our students deserve that same opportunity to discover and fulfill their own potential.
Education is how we invest in Haiti’s future, not only to overcome today’s challenges but to create tomorrow’s triumphs. Haiti’s World Cup journey proved that talent exists in abundance. Our responsibility is to ensure that opportunity does too. That is why Itiah Angels for Learning will continue to believe in Haiti, invest in its children, and stand alongside a people whose resilience has never failed to inspire the world.
Today, the word “Grenadiers” represents far more than a military title. It symbolizes courage, sacrifice, discipline, resilience, and the unwavering determination to overcome overwhelming odds.
