On Saturday March 16th, I had the privilege of joining esteemed authors at the literary café hosted by the Magnificent Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Central Jersey Alumnae Chapter. It was a delightful day at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC) Cultural Space where my book, “Stability: The Belle of the Ball,” was on full display to be discussed with an attentive audience. Here I am offering a glimpse into the intriguing questions posed to me during the event. I hope my answers ignite your curiosity to get your own copy of the book.
As a scientist and entrepreneur, my family legacy prompted me to become a published author and create this inspiring memoir. Titled “Stability – The Belle of the Ball,” it emphasizes the importance of stability to achieve progress. Sustainability, I argued, relies upon securing first our basic primary needs. The first chapter opens with a poignant quote from my father, Joe: “My daughter, I will see you soon. I will send for you one day, my little girl. Be good to your mother, listen to her, and continue to do well in school.” I perceived my father’s journey as the genesis of my own. His endeavors not only presented vast opportunities for me and the next generation but also instilled resilience, fueled by the Haitian notion of “les grands noirs” or “the magnificent blacks.” Departing my “soul-born country” at thirteen meant bidding farewell to my mother, siblings, and my village. Though daunting, this journey was mine to undertake. Separation from country and family and friends proved challenging yet propelled me forward, epitomizing the themes of separation, assimilation, and determination that would define my life. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” became my mantra as I navigated the complexities of a new land, language and culture guided by my mother’s faith: “God will show us the way; He understands our needs and will always carry us through troubled times.” These words sustained me through the trials of adolescence in a foreign land. For those unfamiliar with their ancestral homeland, I recommend exploring books about African countries—a journey of discovery I found enriching. While my upbringing largely reflected my parents’ aspirations, I eventually embarked on a path true to myself, driven by resources available to me. Each time I failed, reinvention became my norm as I was on the quest to achieve my God given potential.
For those encountering life’s challenges, prioritizing self-care and renewal is vital for mental and physical well-being. As my family’s dreams evolve, my adult children have forged their own paths to achieve their potential, a testament to the legacy my grandparents, my parents, and I have upheld. And with the arrival of my cherished granddaughter, the legacy continues, a beacon of hope for future generations.
