In honor of International Women’s Day, volunteer SongShi Liang has designed this artwork to showcase the dedication of women in caring for their children and others through volunteer service. Volunteer SongShi Liang is a student from New York City College of Technology Majoring in Communication Design.
The illustration depicts a student’s grandmother volunteering at the school to cook lunch for Haitian students at EML Elementary school. The kitchen environment is shown, with peeling walls emphasizing the school’s lack of funds not only to hire more faculty and staff but also to repair the walls. Despite this, the grandmother remains focused on the stove. Her goal is to provide nourishment to these students.
On the left-hand side, at the bottom of the illustration, students stand in line, eagerly waiting for their food. However, the lunch is not yet ready due to the school’s shortage of help. As a result, the grandmother volunteers her time to provide extra assistance.
Haiti, being a poverty-stricken area, faces various challenges, including outdated kitchen equipment. The illustration highlights the old and inefficient stove used by the grandmother to cook food, contrasting with the advanced kitchen equipment found in developed countries. This outdated equipment requires a long time to heat up, resulting in students having to wait extended periods for a hot meal.
