At Itiah Angels for Learning, women make up 95% of our volunteers. Their impact reaches far beyond the classroom. Through commitment, compassion, and action, these women are helping students and school communities in Haiti overcome barriers that no child should face alone. For thousands of children, the obstacle to education is not ability or ambition, it is circumstance.Here is a list of the students reality:
Hunger and Malnutrition
Many students arrive at school without adequate nutrition. Hunger affects concentration, attendance, and long-term cognitive development.
Poverty and School Costs
Families struggle to afford tuition, uniforms, books, and transportation. Education becomes a sacrifice rather than a guaranteed right.
School Closures and Insecurity
Political instability, violence, and unsafe travel routes regularly disrupt schooling, leading to inconsistent learning and higher dropout rates.
Unsafe and Under-Resourced Schools
Many schools lack clean water, electricity, sanitation, desks, and safe classrooms. Natural disasters often damage already fragile infrastructure.
Teacher Shortages
Teachers are underpaid, undertrained, or unpaid for extended periods, resulting in inconsistent instruction and reduced learning quality.
Language Barriers
Most students speak Haitian Creole, while instruction is often delivered in French. This can create early learning gaps and long-term academic challenges..
Health and Trauma
Illness, untreated medical conditions, and emotional trauma interfere with attendance, focus, and retention.
It is important for us and our supporters to know the reality the children face and why our help is needed. When students cannot learn consistently, dropout rates rise, child labor increases, early marriage and early pregnancy become more likely, entire communities remain trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty. Educationing offers protection, stability, long-term opportunity and hope.
