As we approach Mother’s Day in May, we take time to honor all the women who nurture, protect, and shape the future of the next generation. But in Haiti, motherhood carries a weight far beyond what most of us can imagine. It is a daily act of courage, resilience, and unwavering love.
From the very beginning, Haitian mothers face challenges that turn ordinary moments into extraordinary feats. Bringing a child into the world often means navigating limited access to healthcare, making difficult decisions just to ensure a safe delivery. What should be a moment of pure joy is often layered with uncertainty, yet they move forward with strength. And that strength only grows. In the earliest days of their child’s life, Haitian mothers become protectors in the truest sense caring for their newborns with limited medical support, doing everything in their power to keep them healthy. When resources are scarce, they find ways. When options are limited, they adapt. Their resilience is not optional. It is essential for survival.
Providing nourishment is another powerful expression of their love. Even when facing food insecurity themselves, these mothers continue to prioritize their children’s needs. Every meal, every effort to feed and sustain their child, reflects sacrifice and determination that often goes unseen. As their children grow, Haitian mothers carry the responsibility of shaping their future by balancing work, caregiving, and the constant challenge of accessing education and safe environments.
