Harnessing the power of social media and technology to promote charitable giving, the social movement of GivingTuseday started on November 27, 2012, at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. It serves as a counterbalance to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, reminding everyone of the true meaning of the holiday season and contribute to meaningful causes that positively impact society.
What is Giving Tuesday?
It is a global generosity movement that has an official celebratory day on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It started in 2012 as a simple ideal, a day that encourages people to do good. Now GivingTuesday has grown into a global network that inspires collaboration, unlocks dignity, opportunity, and equity around the globe.
What is the Vision?
Giving Tuesday reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and radical generosity. The organization defines radical generosity as,
The concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering.

Why GivingTuesday matters today?
- After a decade of radical generosity, GivingTuesday 2022 raised 3.1 billion in donations in the United States, which was a 15% increase from 2021, and a 25% increase since 2020.
- Online donations in the US exceeded $1 billion for the first time on GivingTuesday.
- 35 million adults in the US participated in a variety of ways,o 20 million donated
o 11 million gave goods
o 10 million volunteered
o 15 million “gave voice”
- Social media activity was present in every country and territory in the world on November 29, 2022. GivingTuesday Canada drove more than $50.5 million in online donations and GivingTuesday Mexico drove more than $14.5 million pesos in online donations.
- Giving Tuesday leaders rally cross-sector stakeholders in 85+ countries and 2022 saw nine new countries launch national GivingTuesday movements.

According to GivingTuesday’s 2022 Lookback Report:
83.6% of people worldwide donated to others in one way or another in 2022. Some donated their time. Some gave things they owned. Some gave their voices, advocating on behalf of a cause. Some gave money. Remarkably, all over the world, most people (56%) gave in at least 3 of those ways.
And while 2022 saw an uptick in volunteering everywhere as COVID-19 finally started to fade from view, a reduction in large donors and dollars in Q4 2022 resulted at the end of 2022, a double-whammy not seen since 2010.
